Salesforce Developing AI Agents that Don’t Need Human Supervision

Salesforce is developing autonomous AI “agents” that can work without human supervision. The company made the announcement during its annual Dreamforce conference, reported Yahoo business. It will also be changing the way it charges for its software.

The software giant will now charge $2 per conversation held by its new “agents”, which are useful for tasks like customer service and scheduling meetings. They will also allow companies to be more productive during busy periods without needing to hire additional workers, and shield Salesforce from AI-induced layoffs.

The threat of AI leading to job losses is implicit in Salesforce’s pivot, a company earlier known for pioneering the Software as a Service (SaaS) category. The company traditionally charged a subscription fee for allowing continued access to its sales management software, a model threatened by layoffs as fewer people in enterprises would pay for access.

Many people have expressed fears around AI leading to mass unemployment. The latest Economic Survey of India 2023-24 warned that AI was the biggest potential disruptor for the labour market. It stated that professions like customer service, creative sectors, education and healthcare were at risk of being taken over by AI. The International Monetary Fund (IMF) studies cited in the survey also claimed that AI may expose up to 40% of jobs to potential changes or displacement, specifically cognitive-oriented roles in developed nations.
