UAE to Launch New Cybersecurity Policies for Cloud, IoT

The United Arab Emirates (UAE) is set to strengthen its cybersecurity framework with three new policies, as announced by Mohammed Hamad Al-Kuwaiti, Chair of the UAE Cybersecurity Council.

In an update to the Emirates News Agency (WAM), Al-Kuwaiti revealed that the new policies will address cloud computing, data security, IoT security, and cybersecurity operations centers. Although specific details are yet to be disclosed, these regulations aim to reinforce the UAE's position as a global leader in advanced technologies.

Additionally, Al-Kuwaiti confirmed that the UAE's forthcoming encryption law—designed to set standards for data transmission security using quantum systems—is expected to be finalized by year-end.

The UAE is working to become a leading technologically advanced nation, with digital transformation spanning across sectors like health, energy, education, and aviation. The Cybersecurity Council's objective is to safeguard these digital advancements, which necessitates sophisticated cybersecurity systems to counter potential threats, especially as AI-driven solutions for detecting digital vulnerabilities evolve.

Al-Kuwaiti highlighted the risks of cyberattacks on critical sectors, including financial services, where hackers might exploit information for financial gain. Notably, a 2021 incident involved a deepfake scam that led to a $35 million theft from a UAE bank.

The Cybersecurity Council Chair stressed that the new legislation will enhance the UAE's ability to prevent such attacks and manage cyber threats according to the highest international standards.
