UMass IT to Hold Cybersecurity Awareness Month Events Highlighting Identity Access Management

UMass Amherst Information Technology (UMass IT) invites the university community to its Cybersecurity Awareness Month events in October, which will focus on Identity Access Management (IAM) as part of the ongoing I AM at UMass Amherst initiative.

The first event, scheduled for Tuesday, Oct. 1, from 1-2 p.m. will feature Mary McKee, vice president of engineering at Cirrus Identity, a software company specializing in identity management for research and education. McKee will deliver the virtual keynote, “Do You Know Who IAM? Envisioning a Secure and Inclusive Campus through Identity Management,” via Zoom. In her keynote, she will discuss fundamentals of IAM in both personal and organizational terms, from protecting digital identity in the modern world to leveraging the university’s new IAM initiative to foster a more unified, inclusive campus environment.

“Mary has been working in the higher education IAM space for years, and I’m excited to learn from her wisdom,” said Matthew Dalton, UMass Amherst IT’s chief information security officer. “IAM is not only a critical part of information risk management, but also of every person’s experience as it relates to technology.”

On Tuesday, Oct. 15 from 1-2 p.m. via Zoom, the IAM conversation will continue as UMass IT welcomes campus IAM partners Greg Emanuele, practice manager for strategic security advisory, at CDW, and Mark Cox, associate vice president of IAM strategic advisory services at Fischer Identity.

Emanuele and Cox will share how UMass Amherst’s new IAM initiative will modernize the university’s identity management system, providing all members of the UMass Amherst community with timely and secure access to campus resources. They will also discuss securing the campus through end user access management while simultaneously supporting the user experience with campus services.

In addition to these virtual sessions, UMass IT will provide cybersecurity tips and resources to the campus community throughout October through social media and campuswide digital signage as well as in-person student engagement events with IT student ambassadors.
