Web3 News-AB Devilliers Enters The Web3 Space By Partnering With An Ethereum-Based Investment Platform And Exploring NFTs
South African cricket legend AB de Villiers exchanges his bat for Web3 as he explains his fascination with NFTs and a collaboration with an innovative Ethereum-based investment platform.
His interest in the Web3 and cryptocurrency sphere, as he transitions from an accomplished sporting career, is perhaps less widely recognized.
The 39-year-old South African sat down for an in-depth chat with Cointelegraph as he transitions his focus to the world of Web3. From his obsession with nonfungible tokens (NFTs) to his ambassadorship with a Web3 investment platform, De Villiers has become well-versed in the broader cryptocurrency ecosystem.
As he mentioned in the first episode of Crypto and Sport, his personal experience navigating the crypto ecosystem has thrown up some challenging deliveries to bat away. It has also led to him being an ambassador for a new Ethereum-based Web3 investing platform that aims to provide retail investors with access to possibilities in promising new start-ups.
Creating a level playing field for investment
The encounter also inspired him to become an ambassador for CommonWealth. The Ethereum-powered Web3 investing platform promises to provide retail investors with early access to firms that are typically closed to conventional venture capital investors. According to De Villiers, it "levels the playing field" for retail investors to invest in high-potential early-stage Web3 ventures.
The platform provides average investors with access to early-stage projects and companies during seed and private sale stages. Users can use Bitcoin to invest in a number of funds and have access to tokenized shares released as Genesis NFTs.
Community investors choose which initiatives to support through several funds, with voting power proportional to their investment in each fund. Fund NFTs can be sold, traded, or fractionalized on the platform or other marketplaces, providing access to cash that would otherwise be locked up for long periods of time in traditional seed investment rounds.
Giving regular investors access to a simple platform with a low financial barrier to entry into usually privileged early fundraising rounds resonated with De Villiers' beliefs on financial inclusion.
He sees analogies between the socioeconomic structure of South Africa, with its diverse cultures and tragically wide wealth disparities, and the possibility for projects like Common Wealth to address inequality:
De Villiers, who has 9.5 million Twitter followers and more than twice that on Instagram, added that the quality of the persons behind CommonWealth ensured his alignment with the idea. Alumni from Google, Activision Blizzard, Intel, Cardano, and Facebook have contributed to the development of the Ethereum-powered mobile-optimized platform.
De Villiers is still adjusting to life after an amazing cricket career that included three ICC One Day International Player of the Year awards. Broadcast employment is on the horizon for the 39-year-old, who says he'd like to continue studying the Web3 sector in various ways, whether it's allocating Bitcoin assets or not.
