Escape rooms are fun, but they could also help make VR and AR effective tools for education and AI, research finds

As virtual and augmented reality become more common in classrooms, educators still face a key challenge — how can students engage critically with immersive technology without losing focus? A team of researchers from Northeastern University believes they’ve found inspiration in an unexpected place: escape rooms.

These popular, puzzle-based games are not only immersive but also naturally encourage reflection and problem-solving. By studying how escape room facilitators guide players, researchers aim to apply similar strategies to educational AI. They found that game masters (GMs) personalize support, monitor player progress, and give gradual hints — a method known as "incremental scaffolding."

This model of adaptive aid is now being used to shape AI agents for VR/AR education. Instead of giving direct answers, the AI would help students reflect, think critically, and grow — similar to how a GM nudges players in the right direction without breaking immersion.

The long-term goal is to create supportive AI tools that empower students to solve problems on their own, enhancing both their experience and learning outcomes. A testable escape room prototype is already in development, aimed at turning these game-inspired insights into real classroom solutions.
