WWDC 2025: Apple unveils new 'Apple Intelligence' features bringing offline AI to iPhone, Mac and more
At its annual WWDC 2025 event, Apple announced a major leap in artificial intelligence with the introduction of ‘Apple Intelligence’, a new system of AI-powered tools extending across iPhone, iPad, Mac, Apple Watch, and Apple Vision Pro. Focused on enhancing communication, productivity, and creativity, many of these features are driven by on-device large language models, offering offline functionality while maintaining user privacy.
Among the headline additions is Live Translation, designed to bridge language gaps in real-time. Integrated into Messages, FaceTime, and Phone, the tool offers automatic message translation and live captions for video and audio calls — with all processing handled securely on the device.
Creative tools also see a significant upgrade. Image Playground and Genmoji now allow users to blend emojis with descriptive prompts and generate AI-powered visuals in various styles such as oil painting and vector art. The new ‘Any Style’ feature lets users describe or upload a photo to receive custom-made images. Apple confirmed that data will only be shared with ChatGPT when explicitly authorized by the user.
In addition, Apple is enhancing visual intelligence capabilities, enabling devices to identify objects through the iPhone camera, retrieve additional information from supported apps, and streamline tasks like drafting calendar invites when relevant details are detected onscreen.
A notable announcement for developers is the opening of Apple’s on-device foundation models, allowing third-party apps to integrate intelligent AI features that work entirely offline. This move is expected to accelerate AI innovation within Apple’s ecosystem.
The company also revealed plans to expand language support for Apple Intelligence, adding Danish, Dutch, Norwegian, Portuguese (Portugal), Swedish, Turkish, Traditional Chinese, and Vietnamese by the end of the year.
The features are currently available for developer testing and will roll out to compatible devices later in 2025.
