AI Could Generate Billions in Value for the Global Construction Industry by 2030, McKinsey Finds

Artificial intelligence (AI) and advanced automation technologies are expected to create substantial economic value for the architecture, engineering, and construction (AEC) industry over the coming years. According to a recent McKinsey report, AI could contribute nearly USD 228 billion in annual value to the U.S. AEC sector by 2030, while the European construction industry could realize approximately USD 126 billion in benefits through AI adoption.

The report highlights the scale of the opportunity, noting that construction remains one of the world's largest industries. Global construction output is estimated to reach USD 15 trillion in 2025, with demand projected to grow to USD 22 trillion by 2040.

Despite this growth, the industry has struggled with limited productivity improvements. Between 2000 and 2022, labor productivity in construction increased by only 10%, averaging 0.4% annually, compared to the manufacturing sector, which achieved a 90% increase, or roughly 3% annual growth. If current trends continue, McKinsey estimates that cumulative construction output could fall short of global demand by as much as USD 40 trillion by 2040.

AI is expected to play a key role in addressing these challenges by automating a large share of administrative and knowledge-based tasks. The report estimates that AI could automate around 50% of nonphysical work in architecture and engineering and 39% of similar tasks within the construction sector, enabling organizations to improve efficiency and optimize resource utilization.

McKinsey also points out that as AI agents become more deeply embedded across business operations, companies with ownership of proprietary project data, critical decision-making workflows, and outcome-based business models are likely to gain a stronger competitive advantage and achieve higher profitability.

A significant portion of AI's value is expected to come from streamlining business functions where organizations currently lose time, increase costs, or experience reduced margins. Routine activities such as invoicing, data entry, document processing, and equipment inspections are projected to undergo major transformation by 2030 through AI-driven automation.

The report outlines a three-stage evolution of AI adoption within the AEC industry. Initially, organizations are expected to deploy AI agents to improve knowledge management and workflow coordination. Over the medium term, businesses that convert project data into reusable institutional knowledge will be better positioned to enhance operational performance and drive long-term competitive growth.
