Forget Oil, Real Estate. AI Stocks Created A $15 Trillion Billionaire Club
Artificial intelligence has emerged as a powerful force behind global wealth creation, surpassing traditional sectors such as oil and real estate in attracting capital and generating fortunes. In 2025, the combined wealth of the world's billionaires reached a record $15.1 trillion, marking the first time the figure crossed that level. According to Altrata's Billionaire Census 2026, the total increased by almost 13% compared with the previous year.
The billionaire population also expanded during the year. Altrata reported 3,795 billionaires globally, representing an 8.2% annual increase and the fastest growth in five years. The rapid expansion of artificial intelligence and the strong performance of companies connected to the AI ecosystem are among the key factors contributing to this surge in wealth.
AI Becomes a Major Wealth-Creation Engine
Altrata examined 150 publicly traded companies with significant influence on billionaire wealth and found a notable performance difference between businesses investing heavily in AI and those that were not. Companies with substantial AI exposure recorded market-value growth that was 23% faster than companies without comparable AI investments.
The impact extends across the broader AI infrastructure ecosystem. Semiconductor manufacturers, data-center operators, cloud computing providers, and other technology companies are benefiting from increasing demand for AI capabilities. As the value of these businesses rises, founders and major shareholders can see substantial increases in their personal fortunes.
Over the past decade, the worldwide billionaire population has increased by approximately 60%, highlighting the broader expansion of wealth across technology and other high-growth industries.
Wealth Is Becoming Increasingly Concentrated
While billionaire wealth has expanded overall, the gains have not been evenly distributed. A particularly wealthy group, commonly referred to as “super billionaires,” consists of individuals whose fortunes exceed $50 billion.
In 2025, there were 29 super billionaires, collectively holding approximately $4.1 trillion. Their combined wealth represented around 27% of the total wealth held by billionaires worldwide, despite this group accounting for less than 1% of the billionaire population.
The concentration has increased significantly since 2017. At that time, only 10 individuals had fortunes above $50 billion, and they controlled about 7.2% of global billionaire wealth. Eight years later, both the number of super billionaires and their share of overall billionaire wealth have risen sharply.
North America Remains the Leading Hub
North America continued to have the world's largest billionaire population in 2025. The region recorded an 11.6% increase, bringing its total to 1,337 billionaires. Europe followed with 1,081 billionaires after growing 7.9%, while Asia recorded a 6.5% increase to reach 881 billionaires.
These regional differences reflect varying levels of economic activity, investment, technology development, and wealth creation across major global markets.
Technology Fortunes Remain Linked to Market Performance
Despite the impressive growth in billionaire wealth, much of these fortunes exists in the form of equity holdings rather than readily available cash. Because stock valuations can change rapidly, billionaire net worth can fluctuate significantly alongside financial markets.
Maya Imberg, head of research at Altrata, noted that technology-related fortunes could remain closely connected to investor sentiment surrounding AI. A major change in expectations for AI companies could therefore have a direct impact on the wealth of their largest shareholders.
UBS reported a similar trend in its Billionaire Ambitions Report 2025. Its research identified 2,919 billionaires with combined wealth of $15.781 trillion, representing approximately 13% year-over-year growth. Differences between the UBS and Altrata figures are primarily attributed to differences in how the organizations define and count billionaire wealth, including the treatment of individuals and family wealth.
What the AI Wealth Boom Means for Investors?
The rapid increase in AI-driven wealth highlights how quickly capital is moving toward industries associated with the next phase of economic growth. AI is influencing everything from computing infrastructure and semiconductors to cloud services and enterprise applications, creating new opportunities for companies and investors.
Abhishek Bhilwaria, Partner at BhilwariaFinserv, said the growth in billionaire wealth demonstrates the increasing concentration of capital in sectors driving economic expansion. He highlighted AI's growing contribution to wealth creation, particularly through rising technology valuations benefiting founders and early investors.
He also emphasized that as AI continues to affect businesses across industries, investors may need to pay closer attention to emerging growth areas while maintaining diversification and a long-term investment perspective.
The broader trend suggests that AI is becoming a defining force in global wealth creation, while the performance of AI-related markets will remain an important factor influencing technology valuations, investment strategies, and the fortunes of major stakeholders.
