OpenAI’s Fidji Simo Predicts ChatGPT’s Transformation into a Personal Superassistant by 2026

OpenAI has revealed a forward-looking vision for ChatGPT in 2026, with plans to transform the platform from a conversational tool into a comprehensive personal super-assistant. The company aims to enhance ChatGPT’s personality, better align its advanced capabilities with real-world use, and unlock greater economic impact from its AI offerings.

According to Fidji Simo, OpenAI’s CEO of Applications, ChatGPT is expected to go far beyond answering questions or offering suggestions. Writing in a Substack post on Monday, January 5, she explained that the AI will evolve into a proactive assistant capable of understanding user goals, retaining long-term context, and actively helping people make meaningful progress across their personal and professional lives.

Simo indicated that OpenAI plans to introduce additional GPT-powered products in 2026, while continuing to strengthen key launches from 2025, including ChatGPT Pulse and the ChatGPT App Store. She noted that expanding collaboration tools will be a priority, with features such as group conversations designed to support shared planning and creative workflows. OpenAI will also continue enhancing ChatGPT’s core functions across areas like writing, education, healthcare, shopping, financial guidance, and general decision-making.

This roadmap underscores OpenAI’s ambition to position ChatGPT as a central, all-purpose digital platform. Known for her experience in scaling global consumer products, Simo now oversees all ChatGPT-related features that could contribute to revenue growth, a responsibility she assumed after joining OpenAI last year.

Despite the vision, challenges remain. Industry observers point out that sustainable monetisation models for AI are still uncertain. At the same time, OpenAI has pledged investments exceeding $1 trillion toward data centres and AI infrastructure, with future revenue expected from areas such as AI-powered commerce, consumer devices, digital advertising, Sora product sales, and public-sector partnerships.

Simo emphasised that intelligence alone will not be enough to maximise AI’s impact. In her post, she wrote that transforming technical capability into practical value is essential, adding that ChatGPT should become a daily destination where users rely on AI to manage the most important aspects of their work and lives.

OpenAI’s focus on enterprise adoption

In addition to consumer growth, OpenAI is sharpening its focus on enterprise customers that are rapidly adopting AI. Simo stated that GPT-5.2 currently stands out as a leading model for day-to-day professional tasks, and future versions will deliver stronger performance in areas such as software development, document and content creation, organisational memory, and other business-critical workflows.

As autonomous AI agents gain momentum, she also stressed the importance of building a unified framework to deploy and manage these systems at scale. Simo noted that OpenAI is well positioned to serve as the foundational operating layer for enterprise automation, while connecting organisations with a broader ecosystem of AI providers and services.

The company also plans to enhance ChatGPT for Work by enabling deeper understanding of an organisation’s internal environment, including its documents, tools, and processes. Developers remain a core pillar of OpenAI’s strategy as well. Simo concluded by stating that the company’s objective is to provide developers with a reliable AI collaborator and a platform that supports long-term innovation.
