CM DK Shivakumar announces India’s first government-driven AI University in Karnataka
Karnataka Chief Minister D.K. Shivakumar has announced plans to establish India's first government-led Artificial Intelligence (AI) University along with a dedicated AI Hub, marking a major step toward advancing AI education, research, and innovation in the state.
Speaking at the inauguration of Google I/O Connect India 2026 at the Bangalore International Exhibition Centre (BIEC), the Chief Minister stated that the AI University will focus on developing globally competitive AI talent, supporting cutting-edge research, and strengthening collaboration between educational institutions, industry leaders, and government agencies. The accompanying AI Hub will serve as an innovation and incubation center, enabling startups, enterprises, and researchers to build and scale AI-driven technologies.
Highlighting AI as one of the most transformative technologies of this era, Shivakumar reaffirmed Karnataka's ambition to become an "AI-native State," where artificial intelligence is integrated into governance to deliver faster, smarter, and more citizen-centric public services.
He emphasized that AI has the potential to improve multiple sectors by helping educators enhance learning outcomes, enabling doctors to detect diseases earlier, providing farmers with intelligent advisory services, simplifying access to government services, and empowering small businesses to compete more effectively.
The Chief Minister also noted Karnataka's leadership in India's technology landscape, pointing out that the state contributes nearly 40% of the country's software exports. Bengaluru, he added, continues to be a thriving innovation hub with more than 17,000 startups and a large concentration of Global Capability Centres (GCCs). To support the growing AI ecosystem, the government plans to further strengthen digital infrastructure, including advanced data centers and cloud computing capabilities.
Inviting Google to expand its collaboration with the state, Shivakumar proposed joint initiatives to develop AI-powered solutions across education, healthcare, agriculture, climate resilience, urban mobility, and public administration. He also encouraged the company to support startup innovation, broaden AI learning opportunities for students, and contribute to positioning Karnataka as a global destination for responsible AI development.
Concluding his address, the Chief Minister called on developers, entrepreneurs, researchers, and students to lead the next phase of AI innovation while ensuring that the technology remains ethical, inclusive, and trustworthy for society.
