Crypto.com places $70M bet on AI.com domain ahead of Super Bowl

Just ahead of a new Super Bowl advertising campaign, Crypto.com CEO Kris Marszalek has reportedly set a new record for the most expensive domain purchase ever. According to the Financial Times, he acquired AI.com for $70 million, paying entirely in cryptocurrency to an undisclosed seller. The transaction surpasses all previous domain sale records, with broker Larry Fischer handling the deal.
Marszalek intends to unveil the platform during the Super Bowl, introducing a personal AI assistant designed to help users with messaging, app interactions, and stock trading. He emphasized the long-term potential of artificial intelligence, stating that over the next 10 to 20 years, AI is likely to become one of the most significant technological revolutions.

This acquisition places AI.com at the top of the domain sales rankings. Previously, CarInsurance.com held the record at $49.7 million, followed by VacationRentals.com at $35 million and Voice.com at $30 million. Other notable high-value domain sales include PrivateJet.com for $30 million, 360.com for $17 million, and Sex.com, which changed hands twice for more than $13 million each time, though one owner later declared bankruptcy while trying to monetize it.

Fischer noted that premium digital assets like AI.com are irreplaceable, and opportunities to acquire such domains rarely appear.
While the actual financial returns of such high-value domain investments are uncertain, Marszalek appears confident in the strategic value. Having already secured Crypto.com and invested $700 million in stadium naming rights, owning another category-defining domain seems to align with his long-term vision.
