G20 Summit: PM Modi calls for global compact to stop misuse of AI

Prime Minister Narendra Modi called for a global agreement to prevent the misuse of artificial intelligence, urging world leaders to ensure AI development remains human-centric rather than finance-driven. Speaking at the third session of the G20 Summit in Johannesburg, he stressed that critical technologies must be open-source, globally inclusive, and universally beneficial, rather than restricted by national boundaries or exclusive models.

Modi highlighted that this vision is already embedded in India’s technology ecosystem, resulting in significant advancements in digital payments, AI applications, and space technology, where India has emerged as a global leader.

He proposed the creation of a global AI compact anchored in key principles such as effective human oversight, safety-by-design, transparency, and strict limits on AI use in deepfakes, crime, and terrorism. Modi added that AI systems influencing public trust, human life, or security must remain responsible, auditable, and supportive of human decision-making, with ultimate accountability staying with people, not machines.

The Prime Minister also emphasized shifting from the mindset of "Jobs of Today" to "Capabilities of Tomorrow", stressing that global talent mobility is vital for accelerating innovation. He noted that the G20 had already made progress on this front at the Delhi Summit and expressed confidence that a global framework for talent mobility could be developed in the coming years.
