Google announces glasses are back and search is getting an AI makeover
Google has unveiled a major AI-driven transformation of its Search platform while also re-entering the smart glasses market, reviving a concept it first explored more than a decade ago. The announcements were made during the company’s annual developer event, Google I/O.
The tech giant revealed that Google Search will now support longer, more conversational queries, allowing users to interact with the platform in a more natural way. Instead of relying on traditional keyword-based searches, users will increasingly communicate directly with Google’s AI chatbot capabilities. These upgrades are powered by the company’s latest AI model, Gemini 3.5, introduced during the same event.
According to Google executives, Gemini 3.5 is designed to generate more advanced and context-aware responses based on users’ inputs. Search results will also become more interactive and visual, enabling users to complete actions such as creating calendar events, organizing spreadsheets, or managing tasks directly within Google’s ecosystem.
Elizabeth Reid, who leads Google Search, described the update as one of the most significant changes in the platform’s nearly three-decade history. The new AI-focused search experience is being launched globally across desktop and mobile devices. Users who still prefer the traditional list-of-links format can access it through a dedicated “Web” tab.
Google also shared that Search activity hit record levels last month. Since the introduction of “AI Mode” last year, where users interact with an AI assistant instead of browsing standard search results, engagement with the feature has reportedly doubled each quarter. Additionally, adding images, videos, or documents into Chrome’s search bar will automatically activate AI-powered search capabilities.
Josh Woodward, who oversees Gemini’s development, said the long-term vision is to build a highly personalized and proactive AI assistant. Google disclosed that the Gemini app now attracts around 900 million monthly users, although that still trails ChatGPT’s reported weekly audience.
For subscribers to Gemini AI Pro and Ultra plans, Google is introducing advanced AI agents capable of conducting research, summarizing information, and assisting with planning tasks. The company also showcased a “generative user interface” system that can create custom dashboards and interactive visuals based on user prompts. Another feature, Gemini Spark, will integrate with Gmail, Google Calendar, and other Google services to help users manage shopping, travel, scheduling, and recurring activities.
Alongside its AI announcements, Google introduced a new line of AI-powered smart glasses in partnership with Samsung, Warby Parker, and Gentle Monster. The wearable devices will support voice interactions through Gemini and include built-in cameras for capturing photos and videos. The launch places Google in direct competition with Meta’s Ray-Ban smart glasses initiative.
Google previously entered the smart eyewear market in 2014 with Google Glass, but the product faced criticism and was eventually discontinued. However, renewed interest in augmented reality and wearable AI technology has encouraged the company to revisit the concept. Reports also indicate that Google is developing another advanced smart glasses project featuring an in-lens display, internally known as Project Aura.
Additional updates from Google I/O included new AI-powered coding tools for Gemini and cybersecurity-focused artificial intelligence capabilities.
