Google races to put Gemini at the center of Android before Apple’s AI reboot

Google is accelerating its efforts to transform Gemini from a simple chatbot into a deeply integrated AI layer that works across smartphones, browsers, vehicles, and laptops. The move comes shortly before Apple is expected to unveil its revamped AI strategy at WWDC, powered in part by Gemini technology.

Ahead of the upcoming Google I/O developer event, the company introduced several Android enhancements, including AI-driven app automation, an upgraded Chrome experience on Android, advanced creator-focused features, a redesigned Android Auto interface, and broader security improvements.

Alphabet sees Gemini as a key technology in its competition with OpenAI and Anthropic in the rapidly growing AI market. At the same time, Gemini is also supporting part of Apple’s evolving AI ecosystem, giving Google influence in both Android and iPhone AI experiences.

According to Sameer Samat, who leads Google’s Android ecosystem, the company is redesigning Android around Gemini Intelligence to simplify everyday tasks for users. He described the shift as moving from a traditional operating system toward an “intelligence system.”

Google explained that Gemini will soon be capable of working across multiple apps, analyzing on-screen content, and completing tasks that previously required users to switch between different services manually. Instead of functioning as a standard assistant that simply answers questions, Android is evolving into a more proactive AI agent.

For example, Gemini will be able to gather details from Gmail, create shopping carts, and make reservations automatically. Samat shared a scenario where Gemini could review a barbecue guest list, generate a menu, add ingredients to an Instacart order, and then request user approval before placing the purchase.

Concerns around agentic AI mainly focus on software acting independently without user consent. Addressing this issue, Samat emphasized that Gemini will always seek confirmation before finalizing actions, ensuring users remain in control throughout the process.

Meanwhile, Apple faces increasing pressure to deliver a stronger version of Apple Intelligence after its earlier AI rollout received mixed reactions. Apple continues to position privacy, hardware optimization, and ecosystem control as its major strengths.

Google’s latest Android strategy aims to demonstrate that advanced AI experiences can coexist with user privacy and control, allowing people to decide what Gemini can access, when it can act, and when approval is required.

The new automation capabilities will launch gradually, beginning with the latest Samsung Galaxy devices and Google Pixel smartphones this summer. Later this year, the rollout will extend to additional Android-powered products such as smartwatches, vehicles, smart glasses, and laptops.

Google is also revamping Android Auto with Gemini integration, turning vehicles into another AI-enabled platform. Since Android Auto is already available in more than 250 million cars, the update will include major improvements to Maps alongside Gemini-powered assistance for activities like ordering food while driving.

Wall Street has responded positively to Alphabet’s AI-focused direction, helping the company’s stock rise significantly over the past year and outperform Apple’s gains. Investors are now closely watching how Gemini can become a core part of everyday digital experiences across Google’s ecosystem.
