The Internet Computer Protocol is driving blockchain adoption in Africa
ICP’s DecaHack event showcased the transformative potential of blockchain technology and emphasized the need to develop talent in this field.
Nigerian youth are encouraged to actively engage with blockchain to improve their global competitiveness.
Adedayo Adebajo, co-founder of ICP Hub Sahara—an official branch of the Internet Computer Protocol ecosystem—stressed the significance of blockchain engagement during the second DecaHack cohort held at the University of Ibadan (UI) in Oyo State. DecaHack, organized by ICP, features online blockchain boot camps, a hackathon, and a pitch competition with prizes.
Adebajo warned that neglecting blockchain technology could have detrimental effects on Nigeria’s future.
The Internet Computer is a public blockchain capable of smart contracts, which allows developers to build decentralized applications (DApps) and non-fungible tokens (NFTs).
The event, which brings together innovators, experts, and blockchain enthusiasts from across Africa, aims to foster discussions, presentations, and networking to advance the continent’s tech landscape.
In his presentation, “The Future of Interoperability: How Web3 Innovators Can Bridge the Gap Between Blockchain and DApps,” Ucheena Agams, Web3 ambassador for Arbitrum, explored how Web3 innovators can address interoperability challenges. His insights highlighted Web3’s potential to enable seamless connections between different blockchain platforms.
Agams also discussed the technical aspects of front-end development, emphasizing the role of front-end developers in creating user-friendly interfaces for websites and applications. His session underscored the importance of front-end skills in making blockchain technology more accessible.
The competition’s organizers revealed that the top five startups would be awarded up to $25,000 in equity-free grants. Winners will advance to Nigeria’s national grand finale, the leading blockchain hackathon conference in the country. Finalists will also benefit from advisory support, mentorship, and access to ICP grant applications.
By encouraging Nigerian youth to embrace blockchain technology, the initiative aims to prepare them for success in the global digital economy, drive technological innovation, support nation-building, and ensure Nigeria remains competitive in the evolving tech sector.
