Meta CEO Mark Zuckerberg has reorganized the company’s AI initiatives under a fresh division named Meta Superintelligence Labs, led by Alexandr Wang, former CEO of Scale AI, now appointed as Meta’s Chief AI Officer.

This strategic move comes amidst AI leadership shakeups and mixed feedback for Meta’s Llama 4 model, while competitors like Google, OpenAI, and DeepSeek continue to gain ground. The lab aims to accelerate Meta’s pursuit of Artificial General Intelligence (AGI) — AI capable of outperforming humans.

Zuckerberg has aggressively pursued AI talent, offering multi-million-dollar packages to top minds, including OpenAI’s team and Safe Superintelligence (SSI) co-founder Daniel Gross. The division will also see Nat Friedman, former GitHub CEO, co-leading AI product innovation alongside Wang.

Meta’s bold AI push follows a $14.3 billion investment in Scale AI and the hiring of 11 notable AI researchers from DeepMind, Anthropic, OpenAI, and Google.

While AI industry giants are projected to spend $320 billion this year, experts debate the timeline for achieving AGI. Meta’s chief AI scientist Yann LeCun remains cautious about current methods, while SoftBank’s Masayoshi Son predicts a breakthrough within a decade.
