Meta gets into social networks for AI agents with acquisition of viral Moltbook platform
Meta Platforms has stepped into the emerging space of social platforms designed for AI agents by acquiring the rapidly growing Moltbook network. The company confirmed the acquisition on Tuesday, marking another move to strengthen its artificial intelligence initiatives.
As part of the deal, Moltbook’s CEO Matt Schlicht and COO Ben Parr will join Meta Superintelligence Labs, the AI division the company launched last year. According to a Meta spokesperson speaking to CNBC, the integration of the Moltbook team is expected to unlock new opportunities for AI agents to assist both individuals and businesses. The spokesperson also noted that Moltbook’s concept of linking AI agents through a continuously active directory represents an innovative step in the rapidly evolving AI ecosystem.
The acquisition was first reported by Axios.
Moltbook originated from OpenClaw, a separate project promoted as an AI system capable of performing real tasks. OpenClaw, previously known as Clawdbot and Moltbot, gained widespread attention because its agents could directly interact with users’ operating systems to complete tasks.
Its popularity helped bring AI agents into the spotlight, an area often overshadowed by large language model tools such as ChatGPT from OpenAI. OpenClaw’s assistants could handle activities like scheduling calendar events, sending emails, and even managing online purchases, offering users a more action-oriented AI experience.
However, the autonomy of these agents and their ability to communicate with each other in communities like Moltbook has also raised concerns among some observers about the long-term impact of advanced AI systems. Tech entrepreneur Elon Musk commented that the platform may represent “the very early stages of singularity,” referring to the theoretical moment when artificial intelligence could surpass human intelligence.
Interestingly, Moltbook itself was largely built by OpenClaw agents and is structured similarly to the discussion platform Reddit. The network is designed exclusively for AI agents, which can automatically join once a human user shares a registration link.
Reports suggest the acquisition is likely to be finalized by mid-March, with Schlicht and Parr scheduled to begin their roles at Superintelligence Labs on March 16. Meanwhile, OpenClaw’s founder Peter Steinberger was recently recruited by Sam Altman to join OpenAI.
