Mistral secures $830M from seven banks to build its own AI data centre

Mistral AI has secured $830 million in debt financing—its first since launching in April 2023—to support the acquisition of 13,800 GPUs from Nvidia for a new data center project near Paris, according to reports.

The upcoming facility, situated in Bruyères-le-Châtel, south of Paris, is scheduled to become operational in the second quarter of 2026. Funding for the project was arranged by a group of seven financial institutions, including BNP Paribas, HSBC, and others.

This development reflects a notable strategic transition for Mistral. Until now, the company has depended on cloud platforms such as Microsoft Azure and Google Cloud, along with CoreWeave, to operate its AI models and provide computing resources.

By investing in its own data center infrastructure, Mistral is adopting a more capital-heavy approach but gains full control over its computing capabilities. This is particularly important for European enterprises and public sector clients seeking AI solutions that remain independent of U.S.-based hyperscale providers.

The company’s annual recurring revenue surged to over $400 million in February 2026, a sharp increase from $20 million the previous year. Mistral is now targeting $1 billion in ARR by the end of the year.

This funding forms part of a broader infrastructure strategy initiated in late 2025. In March 2026, Mistral partnered with investors such as MGX, Bpifrance, and Nvidia to unveil plans for a large-scale 1.4 gigawatt AI campus near Paris, with construction expected to begin later in 2026 and operations planned for 2028.

Compared to that large-scale initiative, the Bruyères-le-Châtel data center represents a more immediate and smaller deployment funded through the current debt round. Additionally, in February 2026, Mistral expanded its capabilities by acquiring Koyeb, a Paris-based cloud infrastructure firm.

Founded in 2023 by Arthur Mensch, Guillaume Lample, and Timothée Lacroix—with backgrounds from Google DeepMind and Meta—Mistral has rapidly grown into Europe’s most valuable AI startup. Its $2 billion Series C round in September 2025 valued the company at approximately $13.8 billion.

With total funding exceeding $3 billion and a workforce of around 860 employees, Mistral is positioning itself as Europe’s leading alternative to U.S.-based AI leaders. This positioning is becoming increasingly relevant as businesses and governments across Europe seek to reduce reliance on American technology amid rising geopolitical concerns.
