Mistral Invests €1.2 Billion in Swedish AI Data Center Buildout

French AI startup Mistral has announced a €1.2 billion ($1.4 billion) investment to develop new artificial intelligence infrastructure in Sweden, aiming to position itself as a primary AI provider for European governments and enterprises.

The planned data center will be built in Borlänge in collaboration with EcoDataCenter AB. According to the company, the facility will deliver the high-performance computing capacity required to train and operate its AI models, with operations expected to begin in 2027.

This marks Mistral’s first major data center project outside France. The company views the expansion as part of a broader effort to strengthen Europe’s technological independence. As concerns grow over reliance on U.S. tech giants such as Amazon, Microsoft, and Alphabet—who currently dominate cloud and AI infrastructure—Mistral is positioning itself as a European alternative. The company says it can provide a fully localized AI stack, ensuring data is processed and stored within Europe.

CEO Arthur Mensch described the investment as a significant step toward building independent AI capabilities across the region.

Last year, Mistral also announced plans to construct a data center in France as part of its strategy to reduce dependence on U.S.-based infrastructure.

The company’s valuation reached nearly €12 billion in September following a €1.3 billion funding round led by Dutch chip equipment manufacturer ASML. Mensch recently stated that Mistral is on track to exceed $1 billion in revenue by the end of 2026.
