OpenAI plans to launch GPT-5 in August: Report

OpenAI, led by Sam Altman, is set to launch its most advanced AI model yet — GPT-5 — in August, according to a report by The Verge. The announcement follows Altman’s bold vision of making a free version of GPT-5 accessible to everyone worldwide.

“I am very interested in what it means to give everybody on Earth a free copy of GPT-5, running for them all the time,” said Altman.

Although GPT-5 will debut on the microblogging platform X on July 19, Altman emphasized that the model is still experimental and not yet capable of tackling the most challenging problems, such as International Math Olympiad (IMO)-level questions.

“We want to set accurate expectations. GPT-5 incorporates new research techniques that will shape future models. While we believe users will love it, an IMO-gold-level AI is still months away,” Altman clarified.

In April, OpenAI adjusted its AI release roadmap, announcing the roll-out of intermediate models, including o3 and o4-mini, ahead of GPT-5.

Additionally, reports from Reuters earlier this month revealed that OpenAI is also developing an AI-powered web browser, poised to compete with Google Chrome. This comes on the heels of the ChatGPT Agent launch — a tool designed to autonomously perform tasks on users’ computers.
