OpenAI signs $38 billion infrastructure deal with cloud giant AWS

OpenAI, the maker of ChatGPT, has entered a $38 billion, seven-year partnership with Amazon Web Services (AWS) to secure massive computing resources essential for advancing frontier artificial intelligence systems.

Under the agreement, OpenAI—partly owned by AWS’s major rival Microsoft will gain access to hundreds of thousands of Nvidia GPUs and tens of millions of traditional CPUs, enabling large-scale deployment of agentic AI and other next-generation models.

“Scaling frontier AI requires massive, reliable compute,” said Sam Altman, OpenAI’s co-founder and CEO. “Our partnership with AWS strengthens the broad compute ecosystem that will power this next era and bring advanced AI to everyone.”

The collaboration deepens an existing relationship between the two companies, as OpenAI’s open-source models are already hosted on AWS infrastructure. OpenAI will begin using AWS computing capacity immediately, with full utilization targeted by the end of 2026 and additional expansion planned in later years.

The AWS partnership adds to OpenAI’s growing list of multi-billion-dollar infrastructure agreements, including a $300 billion Oracle deal and the $500 billion Stargate project with Oracle and SoftBank. Altogether, OpenAI is estimated to have secured nearly $1 trillion in infrastructure commitments during 2025.

While OpenAI’s projected revenues for 2025 are expected to reach tens of billions of dollars, the massive investments underscore the enormous cost of powering advanced AI systems like ChatGPT and other frontier models.

This is the first major deal signed since OpenAI’s structural shift away from its non-profit framework, giving it greater flexibility to pursue profit-driven partnerships and expand its commercial ecosystem.
