PayPal Expands Crypto Payments for U.S. Merchants to Cut Cross-Border Fees

Published: 2025-07-30 12:42:36 pm

PayPal (PYPL) has announced the rollout of ‘Pay with Crypto,’ a new feature allowing U.S. merchants to accept payments in over 100 cryptocurrencies, including Bitcoin (BTC), Ethereum (ETH), XRP, and stablecoins like USDC and USDT. The service will go live in the coming weeks and supports wallets like MetaMask and Coinbase at checkout.

Despite accepting crypto from customers, merchants receive USD instantly, ensuring price stability. PayPal will charge a 0.99% service fee, significantly lower than the standard international credit card fee—cutting costs by up to 90%.

"Businesses of all sizes face incredible pressure when growing globally," said CEO Alex Chriss. He emphasized how this feature simplifies global commerce, citing how a shopper from Guatemala can seamlessly buy from a merchant in Oklahoma using crypto, while the business enjoys lower fees and instant settlement.

The feature builds on PayPal’s broader push into digital assets, including the launch of its PYUSD stablecoin and global partnerships to boost stablecoin adoption. Merchants can also earn up to 4% yield on PYUSD balances held within PayPal accounts.

With blockchain and stablecoins offering cheaper, faster alternatives to traditional cross-border banking systems, PayPal's latest move signals a stronger commitment to shaping the future of digital payments.
