Russia’s AI Tactics for US Election Interference Failing, Meta Reports

A Meta security report that was released on Thursday states that Russia is attempting to use generative artificial intelligence in online deception campaigns, but its efforts have been unsuccessful.

Meta has been successful in disrupting deceptive influence operations, and the parent company of Facebook and Instagram discovered that AI-powered strategies "provide only incremental productivity and content-generation gains" for bad actors.

Meta's efforts to combat "coordinated inauthentic behavior" on its platforms come amid growing concerns that generative AI will be used to deceive and mislead voters in American and international elections.

David Agranovich, the security policy director at Meta, stated to reporters that Russia continues to be the primary source of "coordinated inauthentic behavior" through the use of fictitious Facebook and Instagram accounts. The report says that Russia's efforts have been focused on harming Ukraine and its allies ever since it invaded Ukraine in 2022. Meta anticipates that online deception campaigns backed by Russia will target political candidates who support Ukraine as the US election nears.

For a number of years, it has been alleged that election disinformation is spread via Facebook. Facebook and other US-based social media were used by Russian agents to stoke political tensions during multiple US elections, including Donald Trump's victory in the 2016 election.

Because it is so simple to use generative AI tools like ChatGPT or the Dall-E image generator to create on-demand content in a matter of seconds, experts worry that bad actors will unleash an unprecedented flood of false information on social networks.

According to the report, AI has been used to create images and videos, translate or generate text, and write fake news stories or summaries.
