SpaceX is strengthening its position in the artificial intelligence sector as its data center operations and Grok AI agents deliver better-than-expected profitability. AI now accounts for 52% of the company’s income, highlighting its expanding focus beyond its traditional space and satellite businesses.

According to its regulatory filing, the company recorded $14.6 billion in revenue for the third quarter, supported by growth across its business segments. Its Super Intelligence division was a major contributor, generating $7.5 billion through its Cursor coding platform, Grok AI assistant, and expanding cloud computing infrastructure. The division reported $431 million in profit, despite absorbing $1.2 billion in one-time stock-based compensation expenses associated with the Cursor acquisition.

Revenue also benefited from approximately $1 billion in income linked to the Bitcoin price recovery, along with other income from related-party transactions whose sources were not fully specified.

However, SpaceX’s expansion strategy requires substantial investment. The company recorded $19.6 billion in capital expenditures as it continued developing its Colossus II data center and investing in Starship, its heavy-lift launch vehicle. These projects are intended to support future Starlink satellite deployments and the potential development of data centers in orbit. CFO Bret Johnsen indicated that capital investments could reach $35 billion to $40 billion in the fourth quarter.

During a livestreamed investor discussion, CEO Elon Musk revealed that he was spending four days each week in Memphis, Tennessee, where the Colossus II facility is being developed. His focus is on accelerating the data center’s launch and strengthening the infrastructure needed to support large-scale AI computing.

Musk emphasized that power availability, cooling systems, and supporting infrastructure are becoming major constraints on AI expansion, potentially surpassing the availability of advanced chips as a limiting factor. He said SpaceX was deploying engineering resources to address these challenges and improve the speed at which critical infrastructure can be built.

To reduce supply-chain delays, SpaceX is also applying its existing manufacturing expertise to produce metal components used in power-generating turbines. Musk noted that turbine manufacturers can face delays of 12 to 18 months in sourcing specialized metals for turbine blades and vanes. By leveraging its in-house metal-casting capabilities, SpaceX aims to accelerate equipment production and improve access to power infrastructure.

The company is also progressing with its Starship program. Musk said the next test flight, expected in November, could involve attempts to recover both the first-stage booster and the upper stage. Successfully recovering both components would represent a significant engineering achievement, while demonstrating the ability to reuse them on subsequent flights would mark another major milestone.

Meanwhile, Starlink continued expanding its customer base, reaching 13.6 million subscribers. Musk expects the increasing adoption of AI agents to create additional demand for reliable internet connectivity, potentially supporting further growth in the satellite internet business.

SpaceX’s stronger quarterly performance helped it return to profitability, with net income reaching $4.4 billion compared with a $1 billion loss in the corresponding quarter of the previous year. Nevertheless, the company recorded a cumulative net loss of $413 million during the first nine months of the year, indicating that sustained profitability remains an important objective.

Looking ahead, Musk expressed considerable confidence in the Super Intelligence division, projecting annual recurring revenue of $500 billion to $1 trillion by the end of 2027. Johnsen provided a nearer-term outlook, forecasting total company revenue of $33 billion to $37 billion in the first quarter of 2027.

Overall, SpaceX’s latest performance underscores the growing commercial importance of AI services and computing infrastructure within its business strategy. While substantial capital requirements and ambitious growth targets present challenges, the company’s improving quarterly earnings, expanding AI operations, and rising Starlink subscriptions point to significant opportunities across artificial intelligence, cloud computing, and satellite connectivity.
