The Epic Games Store debuts on AltStore, Android, and iOS devices
Epic Games has reintroduced popular titles Fortnite, Fall Guys, and Rocket League Sideswipe to iOS and Android devices via its Epic Games Store, following a lengthy legal dispute with Apple and Google. This move aligns with Epic’s earlier promise to leverage its marketplace to bring these games back to mobile platforms.
Availability and Installation
The Epic Games Store can now be downloaded on iPhones within the European Union, thanks to the recently enacted Digital Markets Act which prevents Apple from blocking third-party platforms in the EU. The store is also available on Android devices globally, and on independent mobile stores like AltStore PAL.
In a recent blog post, Epic Games expressed its gratitude to the European Commission for facilitating the relaunch in EU territories. However, Epic criticized Apple for still blocking access in other regions and described the installation process as "lengthy," attributing the difficulties to deliberate obstacles created by Apple and Google.
Epic Games stated, "The installation process for the Epic Games Store on iOS and Android is cumbersome due to Apple and Google’s intentionally poor-quality install experiences, which involve multiple steps, confusing device settings, and scare screens."
Ongoing Legal Battle
Epic Games founder Tim Sweeney emphasized that despite the current challenges, the company is optimistic about the shift towards increased competition in the mobile ecosystem. "The tide is turning, and the mobile ecosystem is finally opening up to competition," Sweeney said. "We are thankful to the European Commission for making it possible to launch the Epic Games Store in the EU, allowing iOS users in Europe and Android users globally to access our store and games."
Sweeney acknowledged that Epic's legal struggles with Apple, which led to Fortnite's removal from iOS, have potentially cost the company around $1 billion in revenue. Despite this significant financial setback, Sweeney considers it a "small price to pay for the future freedom of our company."
Looking Ahead
Epic Games remains committed to challenging the anticompetitive practices imposed by Apple and Google, aiming to create a more open and competitive environment for developers and consumers. "The fight is far from over, but this is tangible progress for developers and consumers who will start to benefit from increased competition and choice," Sweeney added.
