OpenAI Set to Launch Next-Gen AI Model, Orion, by December

OpenAI is preparing to unveil its newest AI model, Orion, by December. According to The Verge, this launch strategy will differ from previous releases like GPT-4o and o1. Instead of a broad rollout via ChatGPT, OpenAI plans to provide access to select corporate partners initially. This approach will enable these companies to develop their own products and features using Orion, as reported by a source familiar with OpenAI’s plans.

Partnership

Microsoft, a key collaborator with OpenAI, is reportedly gearing up to host Orion on Azure by November. The exact public name for this model remains uncertain, with some suggesting it might be dubbed GPT-5. However, within OpenAI, Orion is regarded as the successor to GPT-4, which debuted in March 2023. In May 2024, OpenAI released GPT-4o, an enhanced version designed to offer quicker responses at reduced operational costs.

AI Evolution

An OpenAI executive has indicated that Orion could be up to 100 times more powerful than GPT-4. Notably this new model differs from the o1 reasoning model launched in September. OpenAI's overarching goal is to integrate its Language Learning Models (LLMs) over time, potentially culminating in a system that could be classified as artificial general intelligence (AGI).

Model Development

Reports suggest that OpenAI utilized the o1 model, also known as Strawberry, to generate synthetic data for training Orion. In September, researchers celebrated the successful completion of Orion's training phase. This announcement followed a cryptic statement from OpenAI CEO Sam Altman, who expressed excitement about the “winter constellations” soon rising, hinting at Orion's upcoming launch.

Organizational Shift

The introduction of Orion coincides with a pivotal moment for OpenAI, which recently secured a record $6.6 billion in funding. This financial success necessitates a transition into a for-profit model. Additionally, OpenAI is experiencing significant leadership changes, with CTO Mira Murati, Chief Research Officer Bob McGrew, and VP of Post Training Barret Zoph all announcing their departures.
